HALO, JULIA
Julia F. Bishop-Hahlo, one extraordinary human being, a resident of her beloved Middlefield, CT, saw her last earthly sunrise yesterday, passing from our midst to new life in the early hours of February 23, 2016. Yes, Julia, we know you hate that we described you as “extraordinary”! We do know what you want us to write. You’ve told us a dozen times:
“I’ve had a wonderful, amazing life. I love my life and I would stay if I could. I have a wonderful, loving husband, Gerard James Hahlo (aka Jerry), who means more to me than life itself. I am greeted every day with the unquestioning love of my furry children Jesse (aka Jesse James) and Cassidy (aka Butch Cassidy of the Sundance Kid), Noah, and Jack (and I hold dear the memories of all of our prior furry little ones). I was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, to Bertha (d. 1985) and Harvey (d. 1970) Bishop (parents who loved me – probably more than I ever understood when I was young). My siblings and their spouses – Janice and Bob McKelvey of Forked River, NJ; James Bishop of Tallahassee, FL; Sue and Jack Lewkowitz of Alpharetta, GA, Genevieve Bishop, Joan Malara, and Christine O’Rourke, all of Long Beach Island, NJ; Irene (d. 2014) and Steve Saulsbery, of Albany, NY, and Harvey Bishop, of Waretown, NJ – have been a constant, a truly precious part of my world for nearly 62 years. My husband’s siblings, Peggy Majeski and Cathy Hahlo are also dear to my heart. My nieces and nephews – Samantha Conti, Kim McKelvey, Kate Frey, Jimmy Bishop, Michelle Bishop, John Lewkowitz, Sarah Lewkowitz, Amanda Mason, Michael O’Rourke, Aaron O’Rourke, Daniel Elacqua, Rachel Saulsbery, Gabby Saulsbery, Becky Bishop and Harvey Bishop, along with their spouses and their children, and my husband’s niece Michelle Adessa – each one of you has added beautiful moments to my memories. One truly extraordinary person, my niece Breanna Christine O’Rourke, touched my life in a very special way with her decision to live each moment with intention, passion, truth, and joy. Aunts, uncles, and cousins: You know I’ve loved you all!”
And yes, Julia, we know you would add that you truly loved your work – caring for the most fragile of newborns at Yale-New Haven Hospital for nearly 27 years and attending to the needs of their parents, that you were gifted with incredible and loving friends and professional colleagues, that you loved beautifying our world through your work with the Mid-Lea Garden Club of Middlefield, and that you were graced with faith and blessed to be part of the wonderful faith community at Epiphany Episcopal Church in Durham, CT. You would say that you found profound meaning in your work with the Premature Life Transitions Project which supported families of your beloved babies in YNH’s Newborn Special Care Unit. You would add that you were honored to serve on the Board of the Honduras Children’s Project. You would repeat (as you have many times before) the utterly surprising statement that you were blessed by cancer (despite its incredible challenges) because it gave you time to appreciate life and because it surrounded you with kind, caring and good people of all backgrounds and cultures.
While most of us find it easy to pick up and thrive on negative news and attitudes, you, Julia, were inclined to see the good, to find the beautiful, and to lean toward forgiveness. And still, somehow, you would deny that you are extraordinary. There is simply no denying it, Julia! You were a neighborhood ambassador, a champion of the most fragile, a true friend of those grieving, a person of unapologetic faith, and an extraordinary human being. We were gifted with your love and blessed by your example. You have changed us forever.
Julia would like all who remember her to (seriously) consider making a donation of blood in her memory. Julia would also appreciate donations to the Honduras Children’s Project, 602 Blue Hills Road, Durham, CT 06422. Donations to the Honduras Children’s Project can also be made at http://www.honduraschildrensproject.org. Celebrations of Julia’s life are being planned, and all who knew and loved her are invited to participate. Information regarding those celebrations will available by email to .

SBALCIO, JOSEPHINE
Josephine Sbalcio, beloved daughter of the late Sebastian and Lucy Sbalcio, peacefully passed from this life surrounded by her loving family.
Josephine was born in Middletown and was a lifelong resident. A graduate of Middletown High School, Josie accepted a position at the Travelers Insurance Company as a reinsurance analyst and remained with the company for thirty-five years. She took an early retirement to care for her mother. Josie was patient, loving and compassionate during the many years that she provided full time care until her mother passed.
In her early years Josie enjoyed traveling with her sister, Ann, and dear friends, Esther, Rosie and Fina Puglisi. The world travelers visited England, France, Italy, Scotland, Wales, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Switzerland, Germany, Monte Carlo – and the countries they loved, they visited more than once. Josie enjoyed the beaches of Hawaii and Bermuda and never said no to a drive to the Connecticut shores for a picnic. The many pictures that recorded these adventures showed a vibrant, always stylishly dressed, beautiful woman enjoying the moment.
Although she never married, Josie had a large family to care for and be loved by. She always enjoyed making special dishes for family gatherings. Her specialty vegetable casseroles were made to the delight of her nephews David and Stephen. If niece Dawn was working in the area, her kitchen was always open for lunch. She enjoyed taking the bus to Hartford for a shopping trip with her niece, Susan. Many years later she provided after school care with special foods and games that Grandnephew Christopher would enjoy. She treasured visits with Grandnephew Matthew and Grandniece Stephanie. Listening to her young Grandnephew Georgie tell stories would bring a smile to her face. When her health began to fail, she sat in the midst of the family and just listen to the goings on with a smile. Just enjoying being there.
In 2009, Josie and Ann, made One MacDonough Place their home. Josie made new friends and rekindled friendships with residents who had been school mates. She enjoyed the lovely setting, the garden, the porch, and the loving and compassionate staff. Tea with lemon cookies were a favorite time of the day. She agreed that it had been a fine choice to spend her last years here.
Josephine leaves to mourn her passing, her sister and life-long companion, Ann; her brother Sebastian and sister-in-law Rose from East Hampton; her nephew Stephen and wife Dawn from Portland; her nephew David and wife Jennifer from California; her niece Susan Koulisis and her husband Alex from Stafford; her nephew Sebastian and wife Lois from Rocky Hill; her nephew Thom from New Jersey; her nieces Karen Gibbs and Ronnie Brunker from New Jersey. Grandnephews Matthew, Christopher and Georgie Koulisis and Grandniece Stephanie Polzella. She was predeceased by her bothers and sisters-in-law Salvatore and Marion and Joseph and Millie.
